In Memory

Ben Couillard

Benjamin Leroy Couillard
1927 - 2017

Benjamin Leroy Couillard, 90, of Chattanooga, TN died April 15, 2017 at his residence after a period of declining health.

He was born in 1927 to the late William Joseph Davidson and Hettie Hammond Couillard of Hattiesburg, MS. He had a carefree life growing up in Hattiesburg and at the age of 15, he lied about his age and joined the US Navy to fight Fascism in the Pacific Theatre aboard the USS Yorktown. He was a firefighter on the flight deck from 1943-45.

He was a proud member of the USS Yorktown Association and loved his “Fighting Lady”. He attended the Standifer Gap SDA Church. Ben died like he lived: surrounded by family, brave and headstrong, and sure of his calling.

He is survived by wife Virginia (Thrower) Couillard, sons Michael, Sam, and Daniel and daughter Elizabeth Ann. He had 5 grandsons and 2 granddaughters, all of whom loved their Papaw Ben.

A Celebration of Life service will be held on Wednesday, April 19, from 5-6 PM at Standifer Gap SDA Church with Pastor Mickey Mallory officiating. The family will receive friends from 4-5 PM.
